On Bondage

So I had this thought during our last meeting, but I figured it best not to derail the discussion:

What would Hegel's safeword be?

When I look at the picture on the top right of the blog, I hear "being-for-self!" in some feaked out tone, with a thick Germanly-accented z sound on the "self". Any other suggestions?

Secondary Works

Here are the secondary works recommended by my professor from our syllabus last fall, in case anyone wants to do some additional work (or read some prose not written by Hegel and surreptitiously translated into stilted English):

Beiser, Frederick:
The Fate of Reason: German Philosophy from Kant to Fichte
German Idealism: The Struggle against Subjectivism
Hegel (Rutledge Philosophers)

Bristow, William:
Hegel and the Transformation of Philosophical Critique

Fackenheim, Emile:
The Religious Dimension in Hegel's Thought
Encounters between Judaism and Modern Philosophy

Geuss, Raymond:
Morality, Culture and History: Essays on German Philosophy

Hodgson, Peter:
Hegel and Christian Theology

Hyppolite, Jean:
Studies on Marx and Hegel

Kojeve, Alexandre:
Introduction to the Reading of Hegel

Macherey, Pierre:
Hegel ou Spinoza (in French)

Neuhouser, Frederick:
Foundations of Hegel's Social Theory

Pippin, Robert:
Hegel's Idealism

Taylor, Charles:
Hegel (I have this one checked out from the library, so you all best not be recalling it!)

Wood, Allen:
Hegel's Ethical Thought

Zizek, Slavoj:
Tarrying with the Negative: Kant, Hegel, and the Critique of Ideology (which I guess answers my question from last week)

Enjoy!

Announcing HEGELBLOG

Hello, fellow Hegel Reading Group members.
Inspired by discussion in group today, I created this blog as a supplement to our weekly meetings.  This can be a virtual space for us to post deep thoughts about the meaning of Knowledge - or just its Notion - as well as logistical information about meeting times, places, etc.  I hope you like it and find it useful.  Is the title daunting enough?
See you on the blog...
